WELCOME!

The New England School of Acupuncture (NESA), the oldest school of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the United States, was founded in 1975 by the late master acupuncturist James Tin Yau So with the help of several of his students.

Dr. So studied and practiced for decades in China, Hong Kong and the Philippines before coming to this country. Through his pioneering work in founding NESA and developing some of the earliest textbook materials in the field, Dr. So has left a lasting legacy. He is considered by many to be the father of Oriental medical education in the United States.

NESA's professional acupuncture and Oriental medicine programs have broadened substantially during our thirty-year history. We now offer intensive three-year master's degree programs that include more than 1,200 hours of hands-on clinical instruction in small groups, instruction in Western sciences and biomedicine, opportunities to contribute to research projects, and a full year of clinical internships in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Students, graduates and practitioners also may take advantage of NESA's extensive continuing education program.

The depth and diversity of the NESA faculty make our master's degree programs a broad and comprehensive learning experience.
Our Oriental medicine faculty is composed of experienced practitioners who have completed advanced training in the United States, Asia and Europe. Our Western medicine courses are taught by physicians, researchers and other highly trained professionals. A number of NESA faculty members are renowned practitioners and scholars who publish and lecture widely. NESA attracts a well-educated and highly motivated student population ranging in age from their early twenties to mid-sixties. Our students reflect many different educational and cultural backgrounds, careers and life experiences, yet share a deep commitment to the study and practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine. This shared commitment creates a cohesive and supportive academic environment that contributes to successful completion of a challenging course of study.

NESA's growth and the success of our graduates have paralleled the growing acceptance of Oriental medicine in the United States.

Over 1100 practitioners have graduated from NESA, many of whom have made significant contributions to the field.
NESA alumni have:

  • established acupuncture clinics in hospitals, community health centers and extended care facilities;
  • initiated clinical research projects;
  • established the Boston-based AIDS Care Project and other acupuncture programs treating people with HIV and AIDS;
  • developed substance abuse detoxification programs using acupuncture in Massachusetts and other states;
  • authored well-known texts in the field of Oriental medicine;
  • served on state acupuncture licensing boards;
  • served in leadership positions in state and national professional organizations;
  • founded acupuncture and Oriental medicine colleges; and
  • taught and lectured throughout the country and internationally.
We take great pride in the individual accomplishments of our alumni and the high quality holistic healthcare they provide for the communities in which they practice.
